What Is WordPress?

In simple terms, WordPress is the easiest way to create a website or a blog (fancy people call it a CMS – content management system). Over 32% of the web is made of WordPress! Popular to say the least!

The best thing about it is that it is an open-source system, which means that anyone can use and modify it, for FREE! Needless to say, people have been very creative with it over time and you can find pretty much any variance of tools to achieve what you’re after.

Also noteworthy, WordPress is extremely easy to use, which means anyone can update the content of a WordPress site without any major technical skills!

What websites can you build in WordPress?

Pretty much anything you want. Below, an non-exhaustive list.

.com? .org?

When you type in ‘WordPress’ in Google, you get two main streams of links: wordpress.com and wordpress.org. So what’s the difference between the two?

WordPress.org is often called self-hosted WordPress. It is free software that you can install on your own web host to create a website that’s 100% your own.

WordPress.com is a paid service that is powered by the WordPress.org software. Very simple to use but you are quite restricted in terms of what you can achieve with it.

Most of the time, when people say “WordPress”, they mean the self-hosted WordPress available at WordPress.org.

To get your own self-hosted website all you need is a domain and a hosting package. Check one.com for a good provider (affiliate link)
